Although Alabama wasn't eligible to play in a bowl, the Tide did roll to another double-digit win season, including memorable victories at Arkansas (30-12), Tennessee (34-14) and LSU (31-0). Despite heart-breaking losses at Oklahoma and vs. Georgia in Tuscaloosa, the Tide appeared on the verge of peaking when rumors swirled about the possibility of Coach Dennis Franchione defecting and going to Texas A&M.
The rumors peaked the week of the Auburn game, and an inefficient and ineffective performance against the archrivals signaled the end of the Fran Era. Tyler Watts and Brodie Croyle became the first quarterback combo to each pass for more than a 1,000-yards in a season for the Tide while Texas Tech transfer Shaud Williams rushed for more than 100 yards in each of Bama's wins against Southern Miss, Arkansas, LSU and Hawaii. He scored on an 80-yard run on the first play from scrimmage against the Razorbacks, the first time Bama had scored on the first play of a game since the 1973 Tennessee victory.
Santonio Beard scored five TDs in the win over Ole Miss, tying the school record set first by Muley Lenoir back in 1920 and then by Shaun Alexander in 1998. |

Notes: For the first time ever Alabama played Hawaii, beating the Rainbow Warriors 21-16. Due to an SEC ruling, Alabama couldn't televised the Mississippi State game on a pay-per-view basis, the lone game not to be televised. On February 1, 2002, Alabama received its sanctions (including a two-year bowl ban and severe scholarship reductions) from the NCAA for recruiting violations under Mike DuBose. |
