After being ineffective defensively for much of the first eight games, Alabama started slowing opponents down and won four straight at the end of the season to finish 7-5 in the first of Dennis Franchione's two seasons at the Capstone.
The most impressive victory came in a 31-7 victory over Auburn at Auburn, a game which not only buoyed the hopes of a better future for the Crimson Tide but also extinguished the Tigers' chances of an SEC West title.
Santonio Beard (199 yards) and Ahmaad Galloway (127) both topped the 100-yard mark in the romp at Auburn, while Andrew Zow, inserted in the line-up to replace the injured Tyler Watts, connected with Jason McAddley for a 45-yard TD pass right before the half to spark the win.
Alabama was back in the bowl business, winning for the first time since the 1997 Outback with a 14-13 victory over Iowa State at the Independence Bowl. A TD pass from Zow to Terry Jones, Jr., and the subsequent PAT by Neal Thomas were the game winners. |
