Coach Paul Bryant goes back to Texas for a reunion with his 1954 Texas A&M team, the famed squad taken to Junction, Tex., for what was termed a "football boot camp." Only 27 players returned from the Junction to play for Texas A&M and 23 of those were at the reunion. While Bryant is out of town, the Birmingham News reports the league coaches are picking Alabama to repeat as SEC Champions but only two Bama players receive "best awards." Dwight Stephenson is listed as the "best offensive lineman" and Major Ogilvie the "best blocker in the SEC." |

The see-saw tenure of Mike DuBose was at its apex for most of the 1999 season, especially late in the year when the Tide won at Auburn for the first time (28-17) and then at the SEC Championship game when Alabama rushed for 300 yards in a 34-7 dismantling of the Florida Gators.
Yet, the season wasn't without its controversies either. Beset by off-the-field problems, DuBose barely escaped being fired before the season started and then after a 29-28 loss to Louisiana Tech, it appeared he might not make it through the season, But, the Tide turned with a 40-39 overtime thrilling win over Florida in Gainesville and culminated with the rout of the Gators in the re-match in Atlanta.
The stars of the show were running back Shaun Alexander and left tackle Chris Samuels. They dominated foes with Alexander scoring 24 TDs and Samuels winning the Outland Trophy. Unfortunately for Bama, Alexander's Heisman hopes diminished in the loss to Tennessee as the stellar back injured an ankle that derailed Bama's chances against the Volunteers and sidelined him for the USM game and most of the LSU contest.
After an inauspicious start defensively, Alabama started playing Crimson Tide defense expected and loved by the fans, but season-injuries to Marvin Constant, Kenny Smith and Canary Knight left the Tide battered for the Orange Bowl against Michigan., a game the Tide lost in overtime. |

Notes: The Crimson Tide had to play in the Orange Bowl without its All-American lineman Chris Samuels who was injured. Alabama's win in Gainesville was only the second ever by an SEC team against a Steve Spurrier-coached Gator team. |
