There were so many highs to the 1994 season they shouldn't be lessened by the one loss, but that one hurt. Carrying an 11-0 record into the SEC Championship game, Alabama rallied for a 23-17 lead when Dwayne Rudd raced an interception back for a score, but the Gators escaped a pair of potential interceptions that were dropped to score a 24-23 victory.
It was the year of senior quarterback Jay Barker, who played with a bum shoulder, but who nevertheless carried the Tide to emotional and unforgettable victories over Georgia, Tennessee, Miss. State, Auburn and Ohio State. The senior from Trussville won the Johnny Unitas Award, given to the best QB in the land, and he did it with a flare and a style of class.
In the finale of the Barker Era, he threw a TD pass to fellow senior Sherman Williams as the Tide beat one of the most-talented teams it ever faced in Ohio State. The 24-17 victory over the Buckeyes in the Citrus Bowl, epitomized the iron resolution to win that had lived during the Bryant Days and had returned with Stallings.
Williams was voted MVP of the bowl, while kicker Michael Proctor joined Barker as an All-American pick. Defensive backs Willie Gaston and Tommy Johnson, defensive lineman Damien Jeffries, guard Jon Stevenson and Williams were All-SEC choices. |

Notes: The Alabama-Ole Miss game was stopped in the second quarter due to a lightning-thunderstorm. During the off-season the NCAA instituted a policy to halt all games when such inclement weather threatened participants and fans. For the first time since 1971, Alabama and Auburn entered their game with unbeaten records, although the Tigers did a have a tie on their slate. |
