Perhaps, no season is harder to analyze from a record standpoint than this one. Alabama was forced to forfeit all its regular season wins when it was determined Antonio Langham should have been ruled ineligible, leaving the official record book saying Bama was 1-12. Of course, the Tide finished 9-3-1.
It was a season of numerous injuries, including several to starting quarterback Jay Barker, who missed the losses to LSU and Florida (the second SEC Championship game) and much of the fourth quarter in the loss to Auburn. The tie came against Tennessee, thanks to a last minute drive for a TD and a two-point conversion by David Palmer. It would be the first for an Alabama team since the 14-14 standoff against LSU in '85 and the last one in Crimson annals. Three years later the NCAA would institute an overtime format.
The Crimson Tide bowled in Jacksonville, Fla., where Bama beat North Carolina 24-10. Back-up quarterback Brian Burgdorf was voted the game's MVP. Langham won the Jim Thorpe Trophy, given to the best defensive back in the country; and Palmer finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting. |

Notes: The Alabama-Auburn game couldn't be shown on network TV due to sanctions against Auburn, but the game was aired via a big screen at Bryant-Denny and an estimated crowd of 55,000 watched the action from the Plains on the Tuscaloosa campus. After winning six national title rings as a coach and one as a player, assistant coach Mal Moore retired from the sidelines to accept a spot in the athletic department's administration. |
