Only the anguishing 7-6 loss to Georgia Tech in Atlanta separated this Alabama team from a second straight national title. Led by the incomparable Lee Roy Jordan and sophomore sensation Joe Namath, this 10-1 team was simply one of the best ever fielded by the Crimson Tide.
For the fourth straight year, Alabama shut its archrival Auburn out, winning 38-0 and it closed it all out with a 17-0 whitewashing of Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, the game in which Jordan closed his career with 31 individual tackles.
Jordan was a unanimous All-American and finished fourth in the Heisman balloting (won by Oregon State's Terry Baker). It was an era before other trophies were specialized for defensive and line-linebacking stars. Alabama finished fifth in the final polls. |

Notes: The SEC swept three of the four major bowls, with Ole Miss winning the Sugar and LSU the Cotton Bowl; and of course, the Tide claiming the Orange. |
