Coach Paul Bryant goes back to Texas for a reunion with his 1954 Texas A&M team, the famed squad taken to Junction, Tex., for what was termed a "football boot camp." Only 27 players returned from the Junction to play for Texas A&M and 23 of those were at the reunion. While Bryant is out of town, the Birmingham News reports the league coaches are picking Alabama to repeat as SEC Champions but only two Bama players receive "best awards." Dwight Stephenson is listed as the "best offensive lineman" and Major Ogilvie the "best blocker in the SEC." |

Sometime in early October, 1957, probably after a 28-0 loss to TCU, the decision was rendered to change coaches at the Capstone. Alumnus and former player J.D. "Ears" Whitworth was in his third and final year of his contract and the Alabama program was in a state of disrepair.
Bama finished the year 2-7-1 with Georgia and Southern Miss being the two teams drowned by the Tide. A tie with Vandy was the other on-the-field highlight. One memorable moment came when Johnny Mack Brown, the legend of Crimson football game and Hollywood cowboy celebrity returned to campus to be honored at Homecoming vs. Miss. State. It was the year Brown was selected to the Hall of Fame.
In early December (after a 40-0 shellacking by Auburn), it was officially announced Paul Bryant would be leaving Texas A&M and returning to Alabama as its head football coach and athletic director. |

Notes: Again, the Tide escaped the SEC cellar with Kentucky taking that role. |
