When Alabama defeated Miss. State 13-12 October 27, 1956, it ended a non-winning streak of 20 games. During that stretch Bama had a 0-18-2 record and thus the reason for sagging spirits in Tuscaloosa. A win over Tulane and tie with Southern Miss helped the Tide to a 2-7-1 record. Another crushing loss to Auburn (34-7) hardly assuaged the growing discontent with the status of this once proud program. |

Notes: At least the Tide didn't finish last in the SEC. That dubious distinction went to Georgia. Alabama's 2-5 SEC record was a notch above LSU's 1-5 and Georgia's 1-6. |
