Charley Boswell is featured on the NBC Show This is Your Life hosted by Ralph Edwards. Among those on hand to help Boswell remember his moments growing up in Ensley, his athletic days at Alabama and his World War II hero days, is famous entertainer Bob Hope. Despite having three ties (the opportunity to go for two points wasn't allowed until 1958 causing a number of ties in that era), Alabama clinched the SEC title with a 10-7 win over Auburn thanks to a field goal by Bobby Luna in the fourth quarter. The win ensured a post-season trip to Dallas to play SWC Champs Rice in the Cotton Bowl, a game more remembered for Tommy Lewis' come-off-the bench tackle of Dicky Moegle than the final Owl 28-6 victory. Lewis' fabled explanation of why he made his tackle was simply, "I'm just too full of Bama."
Back Corky Tharp was the Tide's solo all-star honoree in 1953 winning unanimous All-SEC recognition. The Tide's championship was its first in eight years and the next one would be eight long years away.
Retired coach Frank Thomas and former superstar receiver Don Hutson were elected to the College Hall of Fame |

Notes: Alabama wins the SEC with three ties. Bart Starr is picked to the first ever Academic All-SEC team. Alabama's first home television game is against Tennessee, the 0-0 tie. Hall of Fame announcers, Mel Allen and Lindsay Nelson call the action. Allen, a Bama alum, and Nelson, a UT alum, are still considered among the elite in the history of their fraternity. |
