Coach Red Drew returned to Tuscaloosa as head coach after serving in a similar capacity at Ole Miss for one year. Senior stars tailback-defensive back Harry Gilmer and center-linebacker Vaughn Mancha led the squad to an 8-2 regular season and a sixth place finish in the final AP poll. Sadly for Gilmer and Mancha, their dazzling careers culminated on a negative note when Bama lost to Texas in the Sugar Bowl.
From a historical perspective, the final regular season game was a 21-6 win over Miami in Miami. A year later the series with Auburn would be renewed in Birmingham. Memorable wins for the Tide came against Tennessee (10-0), Georgia (17-7), Georgia Tech (14-7) and LSU (41-12).
How good was Gilmer? Consider these remarkable achievements: he ended his career as the Crimson Tide's all-time rusher, passer, punt returner, kickoff returner and interceptor. In 1947 he led the team in all those categories. |
