Captain(s): Johnny Cain
|
|
| |
Hall of Famer Johnny "Hurry" Cain wrapped up his Bama career leading the Tide to an 8-2 season, including a season-ending 6-0 win over St. Mary's in San Francisco. Cain's 81-yard TD run to win that game is still regarded as one of the best individual efforts in Bama's annals.
Cain probably clinched a spot among the all-timers with his punting exhibition in a rain-marred 7-3 loss to Tennessee in Birmingham. Punting 19 times, Cain averaged 48 yards per attempt. Georgia Tech administered the only other loss to the Tide, winning 6-0 in Atlanta. The season marked the end of the Southern Conference conglomeration and in December of that year while the team was returning from the West Coast, the SEC was being conceptualized by its forefathers in a meeting in Knoxville. |

Notes: Alabama's trip to San Francisco was the first regular season on the West Coast. |
