While Alabama's Crimson Tide had been making some ripples in the South under coach Xen C. Scott, the Dixie boys splashed onto the national scene November 4, 1922 when they vanquished the Quakers of Penn 9-7 in Philadelphia. A crowd of 25,000-a mob scene back then-attended to watch the massacre that never happened.
A field goal by Bull Wesley and a recovery of teammate's Pooley Hubert's fumble in the end zone by center Shorty Propst were the nine points needed for the upset. After the game Scott and his players paraded through the streets of Philadelphia and thousands of delirious fans greeted their conquerors at the Tuscaloosa Train Depot after the team arrived back home from its 2,500 mile journey.
While his players knew he was ill, little did they know Coach Scott was dying of throat cancer and he had actually tendered his resignation to the University back in October, Scott's final team finished 6-3-1 and defeated Miss.
