Thomas Kelley began a three-year stint as head coach and Alabama finished 6-2.
In 1915 Bully VandeGraaf became Alabama's first football All-American selection. A standout tackle on offense and defense, VandeGraff was hailed as the best kicker of his era for his punting and placekicking abilities.
In his senior season VandeGraff kicked 12 field goals and 26 extra points and his best individual performance came in Alabama's 23-10 win over Sewanee, the first victory since 1894 over the then Southern football power. VandeGraaf had a 78-yard punt, scored 17 of Alabama's 23 points, and excelled on both sides of the line of scrimmage. When the game was tied at 10 in the fourth quarter, VandeGraaf batted a pass in the air, caught it and ran 65 yards for a touchdown. He kicked the extra point and a pair of field goals to clinch what at the time was a monumental win for Alabama football.
He was picked to the all-time Alabama football team for its first 50 years chosen in 1943. After leaving Alabama, he enrolled and graduated from West Point. Later he served as an Alabama assistant coach and head coach at Colorado College.
In the Sewanee game, head coach Kelley was in the hospital with typhoid fever and athletic director Lonnie Noojin and former star Farley Moody coached the win. |
